Choosing a College Major

Many things need to be considered when choosing a major. But what are the most important factors to consider when choosing a college major? Students should consider the following:

  • Their individual interests
  • Job prospects after graduating college
  • Time commitment
  • Options after graduating college

Each of the above factors should be considered when students are looking at various college majors. While some students may have an interest for one thing or another, that interest may not be their best choice as a college major due to the other factors we listed.

Some students choose a college major based on how easy or hard it is. While it is okay to want to know what the easiest college majors and hardest college majors are, students should not make a decision based on what is easiest or hardest.

Our college major quiz will help students learn about themselves and identify a potential good fit as a college major. Take our quiz and see what it says your best fit college major is – you may be surprised.

Process for Choosing a College Major

The process for choosing a college major will vary depending on how your college or university does things. Some students may be able to declare a college major the summer before heading into their freshman year. Some students may have to wait a semester or two to officially declare their college major.

Some schools like to make students start their college careers as undecided so they can take a couple of broad classes and learn about different college majors. Business schools are a great example of this – some business schools will have students take general business courses before declaring a specific business major.

One hurdle some students may have to overcome is getting into a program at their college or university. Some students get accepted to a school, but they may not have a high enough GPA to get into a specific program.

Example: You got accepted to Arizona State University. You had a 3.3 GPA in high school. For whatever reason, you did not get accepted into the communications program at the school. The program has a minimum requirement of a 3.6 GPA. You can take general courses at the school (which you will have to take regardless) and get a 3.6 GPA and get into the communications program.

Schools that have highly selective programs will have a minimum GPA requirement to ensure only the top students are eligible for the program. Some examples of majors that may have a minimum GPA requirement may be business majors, communications majors, psychology majors, engineering majors, and various science majors.
